So far we haven't really been warm enough to swim. I know some of our friends were out swimming at the end of May. I would be a brunette popsicle. As luck would have it though the frogs, well they don't mind 60 degrees and water. So when we went out to start cleanup we found a bazillion frog babies. This presents me with a quandary. I like frogs, I hate mosquitoes, frogs eat mosquitoes, but it's getting warmer and soon I'll want to swim a bit. Also I hate to kill anything unnecessarily or honestly even necessarily. So we have a small plastic pond I bought on the cheap at a yard sale to use in the landscaping. This morning I started skimming out tadpoles and putting them in a 5 gal bucket of water then taking it to dump in the pond. This was an all day job and I swear they seemed to have multiplied and there are more than when I started.
Meanwhile there is a rubbermaid tub of pheasants in the sunroom. We thought since they were jumping a lot that they might like a tiny little roost. After all they are only a week old so hubs went down to the basement and made them an itty bitty roost. They didn't use it of course, choosing to sleep flat out on the bottom of the box. We thought perhaps when they get a bit bigger they'll be brave enough to roost on it. Then I walked in the room to see this...
So now there's a lid on the brooder! Don't worry it's got hardware cloth screen in it to let them have heat and air. Flying has added a whole new level of crazy to cleaning out the pen though because these little guys fly like CRAZY and they start fluttering as soon as you take the lid off. They'll have a ton of fun once they are feathered enough to go into the outdoor baby run!
I'll leave you with pictures of two handsome fellas that visited our yard yesterday. They were grazing right along side our geese when I first saw them. I love this time of year when they are in velvet. I hope you enjoy them!
